changes over time~
More than one fifth of the Amazon rainforest has already been
destroyed. The forest which remains is threatened. People who care for the
environment warn about the loss of biodiversity. They also point out that
releasing the carbon which is stored in the trees will increase global warming.
Things that are happening in Amazon:
- Burning of fossil fuels
-Deforestation
-Other human practices
-Carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases like methane absorb infrared
heat from the sun, trapping heat in Earth's atmosphere and changing the global
atmosphere causing a greenhouse effect. Major and fast impacts of climate
change include bigger flooding, storms, drought, and food insecurity.

flora & fauna~
The Amazon rainforest has a huge living collection of flora
species. Plant experts say that in 2.5 lands of the forest you can find 700
different species of trees and twice that number of plants. The trees at Amazon
are really tall, many trees reach 130 meters. There
are many plants and trees that grow in this forest that are known to have
anti-cancer properties.
Scientists have also found that the trees of this forest hold the key to cure
cancer and perhaps even AIDS. There are a number of birds, reptiles and mammals
also insects and bugs.

sustainability & threats~
During the past 40 years, close to 20 percent of the Amazon rain forest has been
cut down. More than in all the previous 450 years since European colonization
began. Scientists fear that an additional 20 percent of the trees will be lost over
the next two decades. If that happens, the forest's ecology will begin to
unravel. The Amazon produces half its own rainfall through the moisture it releases into
the atmosphere. Eliminate enough of that rain through clearing, and the
remaining trees dry out and die. Every day Amazon is getting destroyed.
